titleOfInvention METHOD FOR THE PRODUCTION AND USE OF 1,1,1,4-TETRACHLOR-2-HYDROXY-4-METHYL PENTEN
abstract In a new process for the prodn. of 1,1,1,4-tetrachloro-2- hydroxy- 4-methyl-pentene (I), HCl is added to 1,1,1-trichloro -2- hydroxy-4-methyl-3-pentene (IIa) or 1,1,1-trichloro-2- hydroxy -4-methyl-4-pentene (IIb) in the presence of water. Also new is the use of (I) as a catalyst in the isomerisation of 1,1,1,-trichloro-2-hydroxy -4-methyl-4-pentene to 1,1,1-trichloro-2-hydroxy- 4-methyl-3-pentene. Conversion of (IIa,b) into (I) is pref. carried out with conc. aq. HCl or with gaseous HCl, pref. using a chlorinated hydrocarbon as solvent. The amt. of water present during the reaction may vary within wide limits, but must not be such that the HCl is present in the form of dilute hydrochloric acid. Addn. of HCl to (IIa,b) in the presence of water gives (I) in practically quantitative yield. Use of (I) as catalyst for thermal isomerisation of (IIa) to (IIb) gives a considerable redn. in reaction times (cf.DE3023488).
