titleOfInvention METHOD FOR PRODUCING WATERPROOF SHAPED BODIES FROM CELLED POLYURETHANE ELASTOMERS
abstract Water-tight, fine celled polyurethane elastomers with a density of 0.3-0.8 g/cm3 are made by (opt. stagewise) reaction of (A) organic polyisocyanates, (B) polyhydroxy cpds. with a mol. wt. of 400-5000; (C) water, (D) opt. organic chain lengthenings cpds. with at least 2 NCO-reactive H atoms and a mol. wt. of 32-400, (E) opt. catalysts and/or other adjuvants and aids, using an equiv. ratio NCO gps. to NCO-reactive gps. of 0.95:1 to 1.15: 1, and (F) with the addn. during one of the process stages of 0.1-3 wt.% esp. 0.3-2 wt.% of one or more polysiloxanes (I) in which m is 1-500, Z (same or different) are 1-5C alkyl, 6-15C aryl or siloxy gp., X is as for Z or H-Y-R- gp., Y is -NR'-, -O-, -CO-O- or -S-, R is 1-6C alkylene gp. opt. contg. a hetero atom, R' is H, 1-6C alkyl or 5-9C cycloalkyl gp., and if X is H-Y-R, the organo functional silicone may be converted into NCO or OH-functional silicone prepolymers with polyisocyanates and opt. further polyvalent chain lengthening agents. Presence of the (I) gives fine-celled, uniform cell structure with largely closed cell configuration. The foams are water- tight without the necessity for formation of a surface skin as with integral foams. Prods. are useful as components in automobile shock absorbers, dampers, bump rubbers and suspension parts.
