Chewing gum comprises (wt.%) chewing gum base 18-35 (25-31)%, total water 8-4 (10-13)%; aromatising agents 0.7-2 (0.8-1.2)% and sorbitol 49-73%, esp. 27-33% solid sorbitol and 37-43% liq. sorbitol. The compsn. is made by warming the base material to 40-45 deg.C and kneading while adding solid sorbitol. When this has mixed in sufficiently, sorbitol dissolved in water is added, followed by the aromatising agent and opt. lecithin, and the whole mass kneaded. A sugar-free gum, esp. useful as a soft bubble gum, is prod. which does not require fatty acid derivs. etc. to be added as softener (the high water content provides adequate softening). A satisfactory degree of sweetness is achieved with a relatively small amt. of sorbitol, without need for any saccharin. |
