abstract |
The cylinder space of an internal combustion engine is made in a cruciform configuration with opposed pistons (10) and a transverse piston (9). The transverse piston (9) is linked by cross arm (14) to half crank (15). The timing of the pistons is arranged to give optimum combustion conditions for maximum efficiency and power output combined with low exhaust gas emission. In its multi-cylinder form, the engine has some of the cylinder spaces arranged as compressors to feed other combustion spaces, with an exhaust turbine and heat exchanger. Reduced power operation is achieved economically by using only some of the combustion spaces. On "kick-down" all spaces are brought into use. |
