abstract | Substrate having a hardenable or hardened multi-layer lacquer contains a primer layer and a transparent coatinq. The primer layer is prepd. from a coating compsn. contg. (1) a film-forming binder consisting of, by wt., (a) 5-50% cellulose ester, (b) 0-40% aminoplast and (c) 20-95% mixt. of 0-100% polyester resin and 100- 0% acrylate resin, provided sum (a+b+c) is 100%; (2) metal- and opt. dye pigments, (3) opt. volatile, organic solvents and diluents. The transparent coating compsn. contains by wt., (4) 25-90% copolymer of (d) 0-20% alpha,beta-unsatd. mono- and/or dicarboxylic acid and/or their half-esters with 1-10C aliphatic alcohols and/or their anhydrides, (e) 10-60% alpha,beta-unsatd. carboxylic acid ester having formula A-CHY:CHX-COOR (where X and Y are H, Me or -CH2-COOH; A is H or -COOH when X and Y are H or Me and A is H when X or Y is -CH2-COOH; R is a gp. having formula. -CH2-CHR'-(OCH2-CHR')nl-OH, -CH2-CHR'-NR"-(CH2)n"-OH, -(CH2)n3-OH or CH2-NHR'-O(-CO-(CH2)5-0)n1-H in which n1 is no. 1-10; n2 is no. 2-10, n3 is no. 3-10; R' is H, Me; R" is H, alkyl or hydroxyalkyl), (f) 15-80% ester of an alpha,beta-unsatd. mono-carboxylic acid and/or a diester of an alpha,beta-unsatd. dicarboxylic acid with linear or branched 1-18C monoalcohols, (g) 0-60% monomer different from but copolymerisable with (d), (e) and (f) provided sum (d+e+f+g) is 100%; (5) 0-45% polyester resin, (6) 10-50% aminoplast, (provided sum of (4+5+6) is 100%), and opt. (7) volatile organic solvents and/or diluents. The coating compsns. achieve a multi-layer metal effect lacquer, on metal, plastic or glass, e.g. on car body-work metal. Layer (B) protects the whole lacquer against mechanical effects, chemical and weathering, e.g. UV light and prevents cracking, gloss redn. and blistering. Corrosion stability in salt-spray test exceeds 240 hrs. |
