titleOfInvention | METHOD FOR PRODUCING SYNTHETIC, WATER-FREE SODA AND CHLORINE |
abstract | Chlorine is produced by (i) heating NH4Cl to give NH3 and gaseous HCl; (ii) reacting the vapours with Cd, Zn or pref. Sn to give a metal chloride; and (iii) electrolysing the metal chloride in the presence of a molten salt electrolyte, to give Cl2 and the metal. This sequence can be used (claimed) in the integrated prodn. of Cl2 and Na2CO3, involving (a) heating CaCO3 to give CaO and CO2; (b) reacting CO2 with H2O, NH3 and NaCl to give NaHCO3 and NH4Cl; (c) heating the NaHCO3 to give H2O, CO2 and Na2CO3; (d) as stage (i) above; (e) as stage (ii), giving a metal chloride, NH3 and H2; (f) as stage (iii); (g) recycling the NH3 from stage (e) and the metal; (h) burning the H2 from stage (e) to give the heat necessary for the process. Cf. conventional prodn. of Cl2 and Na2CO3 (i.e. brine electrolysis and the Solvay process), this process has a reduced electrical requirement, does not require the use of a dimensionally stable anode, and does not produce CaCl2 with its attendant disposal problems. |
