abstract Anhydrous and hydroxybenzoic acid-free alkali salts of hydroxybenzoic acid esters, of formula (I), are new (R1 is alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl; R2 and R3 (same or different) are H, halogen, OH, amino, alkylamino, alkyl, alkoxy, aralkyl or aryl; M is alkali metal). (I) are starting materials in the prodn. of synthetic fibres (DT 2044705) and in the prodn. of metal salts of hydroxybenzoic acid (US 2046324; SW-120451). (I) also have microbicidal action and are useful as additives to foodstuffs, pharmaceutical compsns., cosmetics, etc., to prevent deterioration of animal and vegetables prods.
