Cellulosic fabris (or their blends) swollen with water-miscible swelling agents are dyed or printed by application of a padding liquor or paste contg. an azo dye of formula (I). (D= residue of a diazo component; R = substd. phenyl or naphthyl). The dye is then fixed by heating. Esp. pref. dyes have D = phenyl substd. by Cl, Br or CH3; Z = phenyl substd. by (m)ethoxy or Cl; specifically the dye (Ia) having D = 2- methyl-5-chlorophenyl and Z = 4-methoxyphenyl). The method is useful for native or regenerated cellulose esp. cotton-polyester blends where tone-on-tone dyeings are achieved in a single stage. Yellow, red to blue shades of good fastness, particularly to washing, sublimation, light and dry cleaning, are achieved. |
