abstract Continuous prodn. of finely-divided, water-insoluble, water-contg. silicates of formula (I) x1Na2O.x2K2O.Al2O3.y SiO2 (x1 = 0.2-1.4; x2 = 0.005-0.5; y = 1.5-10; x1 + x2 = 0.3-1.5, pref. about 1) comprises mixing aq. solns. of Na and/K aluminate (A) and Na and/or K silicate (B) in presence of excess NaOH, then filtration. Molar compsns. of (A) and (B) are resectively: Al2O3:0-10 Na2O:0-5 K2O:20-200 H2O with Na2O + K2O:Al2O3 > 1; and SiO2: 0-10 Na2O:0-5 K2O: 5-200 H2O with Na2O + K2O:SiO2 > 0.2 and the overall compsn. of the mixt. 1.5-15 Na2O: 0.005-5 K2O: Al2O3: 1-15 SiO2:50-400 H2O. Two solns. are mixed and atomised at 0-103 (0-70) degrees C so that they first react in spray streams to form an X-ray amorphous gel. Final prod. contains 0.1 wt.% particles over 25 mu m. (I) are useful as replacement for phosphates in washing, rinsing and cleaning compsns.
