Low-froth surface size for paper consists of an aq. aq.-alcoholic soln. of alkali, amine or ammonium salts of copolymers contg. carboxylic half-amine gps. These are obtd. by reacting copolymers or terpolymers of maleic anhydride, diisobutylene and opt. cynil comonomers with 5-50 (15-40) mole-% (w.r.t. maleic anhydride gps.) of a prim. aliphatic or aromatic monoamine. The amine is pref. of formula R-NH2 (in which R is 1-8C n-alkyl, iso-Pr, iso-Bu, cyclohexyl or phenyl). The anionic size gives excellent results with little or no frothing and can be used on most grades of paper. |
