titleOfInvention METHOD FOR PRODUCING SILICON CARBIDE MOLDED BODIES
abstract A cast refractory shape is made from an aq. slip of refractory powder contg. 1-10% of a water-miscible resin which sets at 200 degrees C to an acid resistant structure. The slip is cast into a plaster mould, heated to cure the resin, and the mould is then decomposed by acid treatment to free the green compact which is then fired. Alternatively an aq. slip contg. a mixt. of 3 micron SiC particles and other particles -200 mesh is cast into a plaster mould contg. 0.1-4 wt.% organic polymer. After casting, the mould and casting is heated >600 degrees C in an oxidising atmosphere to decompose the mould and thus free the green compact. Used in producing slip cast SiC turbine wheels or other shapes of Si3N4, Al2O3, SiC-Si3N4. The mould is easily removed after casting without damaging the green casting.
