abstract N-Substd, alpha,beta-unsatd. carboxylic amides of formula (I) are prepd. by reacting at 100-200 degrees C., pref. 120-175 degrees C., alpha,beta-substd. carboxylic amine of formula (II) with an amine of formula (III) to form by elimination of ammonia, an N-substd. beta-hydroxy or beta-alkoxy carboxylic amide (IV) and then pyrolysing (IV) in presence of a catalyst. R1HC=C(R2)CONH(Y)R3 (I): ZR1HC-CHR2CONH (II): H2N(Y)R3. (R1 and R2 are H or CH3; Y is a bivalent 2-30C, pref. 2-18C organic chain, pref. a group of the formula -(Y1)m-(Y2)n-(Y3)t where Y1, Y2 and Y3 represent an alkylene group or a group corresponding to a 5-6C ring system, and m+n+t is 2 or 3; R3 is H or a substd. amino group -N(R4)(R4) where R4 and R5 are 1-4C alkyls. Z is hydroxy or an alcohol residue of formula R6O where R6 is a 1-4C alkyl). (I) are obtd. in high yield and in a very pure state by fractional distillation. The process is simple and without any need of a solvent.
