abstract Biocatalysts are produced from the following components: (a) a suspension or soln. of an enzymatically active substance (whole cells, cell fragments or enzymes) in an aq. soln. of a polyelectrolyte (I) with a concn. of 0.5-15 wt.% (b) a soln. of a cpd. contg. multivalent ions of opposite charge to (I) in H2O with a concn. of 0.5-35 wt.%; (c) a soln. of a different cpd. contg. multivalent ions of opposite charge to (I) in N2O with a concn. of 0.5-35 wt.%. Process comprises (1) injecting mixt. (a) into soln. (b) to produce spheroidal particles with 0.5-5 mm size, and stirring the mixt. for 5-240 min.; (2) filtering off the particles and washing with physiological saline; (3) drying the particles in an air stream at =80 degrees C for =48 hrs.; (4) introducing the particles into soln. (b) or (c) to harden them; and (5) washing the hardened particles. Process gives prods. with high mechanical strength (e.g. crush strength of 0.5-1 kg) and a high content of active material (e.g. =90 wt.%).
