Prodn. of 2-(2-hydroxyethoxy)ethyl N-(alpha, alpha, alpha-trifluoro-m-tolyl)anthranilate (I) comprises reacting N-(alpha, alpha, alpha-trifluoro-m-tolyl)anthranilic acid (II) with diethylene glycol (III) in presence of acid catalyst, and opt. of inert solvent, at 100-180 (130-150) degrees C. Pref. water formed is removed azeotropically and (III) is used at 4-6 moles excess. The catalyst is pref. p-toluene-sulphonic acid and the solvent xylene or toluene. Reaction may be under an inert gas in a slight vacuum. (I) is a pharmaceutical (no details). One-step method is simpler than reaction of (II) with 2-(2-chloroethoxy) ethanol and gives a prod. easily purified by distn. The only by-product is water. |
