titleOfInvention Liquid crystalline dielectric
abstract The invention relates to a liquid-crystalline dielectric which allows electro-optical displays to be operated with particularly low voltages. A number of liquid-crystalline compounds with positive dielectric anisotropy (DKA) are already known which meet the stability requirements placed on dielectrics for electronic components and are also colorless. These liquid-crystalline basic substances are used to a large extent in the manufacture of electro-optical display devices, in particular for wristwatches and pocket calculators. In these applications, the lowest possible operating voltage is desirable because in this way the number of batteries required can be reduced or energy-consuming voltage multipliers can be dispensed with. The invention relates to a liquid-crystalline dielectric with positive DKA based on a mixture of biphenyl derivatives and phenylcyclohexane derivatives. It has been shown that, within the scope of the invention, the mixing ratio of the components is of major importance. Those liquid-crystalline dielectrics according to the invention in which the weight ratio of the components is in the range from 2: 1 to 1: 2 have proven to be particularly favorable, the best results being achieved with mixtures in which the amount of the phenylcyclohexane component (s) predominates. ...ETC
