abstract Chenodeoxycholic acid(I) is isolated from porcine bile by first saponifying to give a mixture of bile acids, separating these bile acids from the residues, esterifying these acids, and forming a complex of the chenodeoxycholate ester constituent of these mixed bile acid esters with benzene or toluene. The remaining bile acid esters are acetylated, the hyocholic acid ester triacetate and chenodeoxycholic acid ester diacetate are isolated the chenodeoxycholic acid ester diacetate saponified and the chenodeoxycholic acid isolated and purified. (I) is used to dissolve gall stones in vivo.
