titleOfInvention | METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING NOVEL MICROCAPSULA COATING COMPOSITIONS THAT ARE CURABLE BY RADIATION |
abstract | The prepn. of a novel liq. coating compsn. created in the presence of a combination of IR and UV light to a dry, solid, non tacky resin, and which contains microcapsules having hydrophobic core material comprises (a) prepn. of an emulsion contg. a hydrophobic emulsion component dispersed in a hydrophilic emulsion component. The hydrophobic component comprises a hydrophobic liq. contg. a first wall-building material which can react with a second wall-building material by condensn. polymerisation to form a polymeric capsule wall. The first wall-building material is soluble in the hydrophobic emulsion component and the polymeric capsule wall is insoluble in the hydrophilic and hydrophobic emulsion components. The hydrophilic emulsion component contains an emulsifier dispersed in a hydrophilic liquid which is curable by radiation, this hydrophilic liquid contg. water and at least one polar cpd. which is curable by radiation,a nd also a second wall-building material. This is followed by (b) mixing the emulsion under conditions of temp. and time calculated to achieve complete polymerisation of the first and second wall-building materials and to form a dispersion of microcapsules in the hydrophilic emulsion component; the microcapsules have walls which are impermeable to the hydrophilic and hydrophobic emulsio components. Then (c) the photoinitiator is added to the microcapsules. Pref. the microcapsules contains a chromogenic material in the hydrophobic core liquid. Used for pressure-sensitive carbonless transfer (copying) papers. The compsns. contain little water and thus the amt. of energy required for drying is reduced. Also the compsn. may be cured durng a combined polymerisation and drying stage thus obviating additional or separate drying stages. |
