titleOfInvention | METHOD FOR PRODUCING O-SUBSTITUTED CINNAMYLPHENOLS |
abstract | Ortho-cinnamyl phenol (I) is prepd. by heating cinnamyl alcohol (II) with phenol (III) at 125-250 degrees C in the presence of a catalytically effective quantity of activated alumina. Side reactions are minimal, ensuring high yields of (I). In an example, 98.2 g phenol, 94 g cinnamyl alcohol, and 21 g calcined alumina, 'Catapal SB' (RTM), with 30 ml toluene were heated at 170-180 degrees C under a 25 ml Dean and Stark trap. The prod. contained 64.7% (I). |
