abstract | Heat-degradeable coating compsn. comprises an organic resin (I) with thermal decomposition temp. 250 degrees C, and 0.01-0.5% of a chemical marker (II). (II) is an aromatic polychlorinated or polyfluorinated cpd. or an aliphatic polyfluorinated cpd. with decomposition temp. >100 degrees C over that of (I) and volatility range comparable to that of 24-25C paraffins. Pref. (II) includes cpds. of formula (IIa). In the formula X is F or Ce; R and R1 are each 1-23C alkyl (total 12-24C), 6-20C cycloalkyl or together are -(CH2)yQ(CH2)2. Completing a heterocycle. Q is O, S or SO2; and y and z are 1-23, together being 12-24. (I) is esp. an epoxy or alkyd resin. Used for detecting overheating in electrical equipment. Smoke released by overheating is collected, solvent-extracted, then analysed by gas chromatography to identify (II). (II) can be detected by electron-capture of microconlometric detector at extremely low concns. Different compsns. can be applied to different parts of the appts. and the location of the fault identified by the partic. (II) released. |
