abstract D/S: E(BE, CH, DT, FR, GB, NL). (A) Propionitrile derivs. of formula (I) are new (R is H, alkyl, aryl or aralkyl, or N(R)2 is a heterocycle). (B) The following process is new (II) is an intermediate for vitamin B1. (II) can be prepd. via (I) without use of toxic Me2SO4 (c.f. DT2323845). (II) is obtd. in good yield in a form suitable for direct conversion to vitamin B1. (I) can also be obtd. in good yield and suitable for direct reaction with (IV).
