titleOfInvention FINE PARTITION, EXPANDABLE STYRENE POLYMERIZED
abstract Fine-particle expandable styrene polymers contain 0.005-0.3 (0.01-0.2)wt.% based on polymer, of alpha, beta-dibromoethyl benzene. Homo- or co-polymerisation is carried out in aq. suspension in presence of a blowing agent, with addn. of the dibromoethyl benzene before or during polymerisation. The dibromoethyl may be produced in situ from styrene, by direct addn. of Br2, which eliminates the need for a separate bromination plant. Used in moulding of polystyrene foam articles by pre-expansion in steam or hot gas, followed by blowing and fusing the beads in a mould. Cooling time in the mould before the part can be removed without cracking is reduced, giving increased output at lower cost.
