abstract | Prepn. of aralkyl- and alkyl-phenol-ethers having formula (R1 is H, OH or -OR2, or both R1 gps. together with 2 adjacent C atoms of the benzene ring can form an aromatic gp.; R2 is an araliphatic or aliphatic gp.; R3 is an aliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic gp., H, halogen, -CN, -NO2, R4COO-, R4S- or R4O-; R4 is an aliphatic or aromatic gp.) comprises reacting phenols having formula (II) (where R5 is R1 or also OH if R1 is -OR2) with diaralkyl-carbonates or dialkyl-carbonates having formula (III) O = C(OR2)2 (III) in the presence of a tert. amine and/or tert. phosphine, above 100 degrees C. (I) are starting materials for the prepn. of dyes, plant protective agents and perfumes. Pure (I) are obtd. in high yields. Separation and neutralisation steps and corrosion problems are prevented. By-prods. are 1 mol alcohol and non-toxic O2. The alcohol can be re-converted to dialkyl carbonate or diaralkyl carbonate by reaction with CO and O2. |
