titleOfInvention PROCESS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF ALKALICELLULOSE
abstract In the prodn. of alkali cellulose, a soluble inorganic Na salt is added to the NaOH soln. to give an optimum concn. of Na ions, up to 30% (pref. 5-15%) of which come from the salt. The alkali soln. may contain hemi-cellulose from previous use, and also wetting agent. Total Na ion concn. is pref. 16-19 wt. %. The salt is pref. NaCl or Na2SO4. Used in mfr. of viscose solns. for spinning into fibres, etc. and of carboxymethyl cellulose. Swelling of the cellulose sheet is reduced, and prods. with high cellulose content are obtd. without use of high pressure to squeeze out fluid from the treated sheet, which makes comminution difficult.
