titleOfInvention NEMATIC LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, WHICH IS OPTIONALLY EXCITABLE FOR DYNAMIC LIGHT DISPERSAL OR DOUBLE REFRACTION
abstract The device is suitable for display panels in electronic units for representing different operating states. It consists of a cell (7) filled with a nematic liquid crystal (5) which exhibits negative dielectric anisotropy. The cell (7), which is produced in a sandwich design, has a pair of transparent conducting electrodes (3, 3'). The liquid-crystal molecules are aligned with their longitudinal axis perpendicular to the electrodes (3, 3') by means of a surface-active substance. If an alternating electric field with a frequency lower than a threshold frequency is applied to such a display device, the liquid crystal can be excited to dynamic scattering of light, while when an electric field with a frequency higher than the threshold frequency is supplied the crystal is excited to birefringence of light. In this case, the threshold frequency is in the lower audio frequency range. <IMAGE>
