titleOfInvention | NEMATIC LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, WHICH IS OPTIONALLY EXCITABLE FOR DYNAMIC LIGHT DISPERSAL OR DOUBLE REFRACTION |
abstract | The device is suitable for display panels in electronic units for representing different operating states. It consists of a cell (7) filled with a nematic liquid crystal (5) which exhibits negative dielectric anisotropy. The cell (7), which is produced in a sandwich design, has a pair of transparent conducting electrodes (3, 3'). The liquid-crystal molecules are aligned with their longitudinal axis perpendicular to the electrodes (3, 3') by means of a surface-active substance. If an alternating electric field with a frequency lower than a threshold frequency is applied to such a display device, the liquid crystal can be excited to dynamic scattering of light, while when an electric field with a frequency higher than the threshold frequency is supplied the crystal is excited to birefringence of light. In this case, the threshold frequency is in the lower audio frequency range. <IMAGE> |
