abstract The flame-proof interior spaces may be cupboards or refuge rooms to be used in case of fire, esp. on high floors not readily reached by fire escape ladders. The walls (18) have at least one outside heat-insulating layer, and inside layer incorporating large-area hollow unit (6). These are filled with a meltable crystalline mass which has a melting point below the temp. permissible in the interior (19), and with crystalisation temp. considerably lower still. The hollow units may be set in a water-filled space (5), with a pump for spraying water through the outlets (9) to cool people in the compartment. The outside surface can be of chromium, or other infra-red-reflecting material.
