abstract Prodn. of hydroquinone monoalkyl ethers of formula (I) (where R is 1-18C alkyl; R' is H or 1-4C alkyl; X and Y are H or together complete a naphthalene ring) involves reacting the corresp. hydroquinone (II) and alcohol in the presence of the corresp. quinone (III), using a (II): (III) wt. ratio of 5-20:1 in the presence of an acid dehydration catalyst at room temp. to the reflux temp. and at atmos. pressure. The reaction takes place under mild conditions of temp. and pressure.
