abstract | Compsn. for suppressing bacteria growth in fungus or yeast cultures contains a sugar and either a paraquinone (I) or a hemiquinone (II). In the formulae R's are individual substituents, or a pair(s) of neighbouring R's denotes a fused ring(s); n=0-4. A denotes a fused heterocyclic or carbocyclic ring contg. t the marked double bond R's are individual substituents, or a pair of neighbouring R's denotes another fused ring; m=0-3). Yeasts of fungi (including fungi producing antibiotics) can be selectively cultured and yields are increased due to the suppression of bacteria growth. The method is also useful for the identification of various yeasts and fungi (including pathogenic species). The method is esp. effective against gram-positive bacteria; the action on gram-negative bacteria is somewhat weaker. |
