titleOfInvention RESINY TERPE MALEIMIDE AND METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING IT
abstract Novel terpene maleimide resins are prepd. by (i) reacting equimolar amts. of a non-conjugated terpene (mixt) and maleic anhydride at 140-200 degrees C in the presence of 0.05-0.15 wt % iodine, based on the terpene, (ii) recovering a mixt. of is not 85% mono-adduct, and is not >15% di-adduct, (iii) further reacting the adduct mixt. with stoichiometric amts. of an aliphatic primary diamine, and (iv) recovering the resin having an average mol. wt. of 500-600. The prods. are useful as tackifiers for polar elastomers. In an example, a prod. obtd. using a 90% terpinolene/10% monocyclic terpene hydrocarbon and terpene alcohols mixt as the non-conjugated terpene component, and ethylene diamine as the diamine component, had a mol. wt. of 533, a softening pt. of 88 degrees C, an acid no. of 1 and a cloud pt. of 159 degrees C.
