abstract In the prodn. of 2-methylene-cyclododecanone (Ia) and new 2,12-bismethylene-cyclododecanone (Ib), cyclododecanone (II) is reacted with an at least equimolar amt. of formaldehyde, (or a cpd. releasing formaldehyde) and catalytic amts. to a molar excess of a carboxylic acid and a basic nitrogenous cpd. at 50-200 degrees C. (Ia) is a known perfume. (Ib) is also useful as a perfume, having a woody-warm, slightly musk-like odour. The process is simple and economical. Reaction conditions can be varied so that (Ia) or (Ib) is the predominant prod.
