| abstract | In a power-driven typewriter having type levers swung against the platen, each type lever has an operating lever which, toward the end of its actuating movement, abuts a rail common to all the operating levers. The rail is connected to a pneumatic piston and cylinder damping device. The cylinder damping device reduces the momentum of the type lever before the moment of impact, and thus reduces noise and wear. The rail may act on the piston through a double-ended lever whose ratio is varied. This causes a variation of the stroke of the piston according to the impact requirements of particular letters. |
