titleOfInvention LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY DEVICE
abstract Device comprises a layer of nematic liq. crystals sandwiched between two transparent multilayer blocks. Each block comprises the following layers, listed in order of increasing distance from the liq.-crystal layer: (1) a Ge oxide layer which orients the liq.-crystal mols. so that the major axes of the mols. adjacent to one block are parallel to the block and to each other and are at right angles to the major axes of the mols. adjacent to the other block; (2) a current-conducting layer; (3) a dielectric layer; (4) a polarising layer. Stable and reproducible orientation is achieved with thinner Ge oxide layers compared with Si monoxide; this allows the excitation voltage to be reduced to 1.8V.
