Thermosetting resin coatings having a structured surface, esp. of transparent or translucent unsaturated polyester resin, e.g. for wall and ceiling decoration, car interiors, aeroplanes, furniture and doors, are produced, pref. continuously, by (i) coating a carrier substrate with an active primer layer contg. radical polymerisation initiators, esp. peroxides, sensitisers, e.g. photo-sensitisers, activators, promoters and/or crosslinking agents for hardening the resin coating; (ii) providing the active primer layer, in sections, with barrier-forming substances which prevent upward diffusion or migration of initiator, sensitiser, etc. below sections, and (iii) finally applying the resin coating. The barrier-forming substances may be: (a) binders of cellulose derivs., hydroxyethyl cellulose, cellulose acetate, cellulose acetate-butyrate and/or nitrocellulose, polymethyl methacrylate and colophony esters, esp. contg. reactive double bonds, vinyl chloride-acrylate copolymers contg. active OH gps., allyl-modified polymeric plasticisers, polyurethanes and polyacrylonitrile, and (b) pigment compsns. carried by modified colophony esters. |
