abstract Prodn. of pyridone derivs. of formula (I) (in any possible tautomeric form) comprises reacting (a) HC=C.COOR1 (II) and XCH2.CONHR (III) or (b) HC=C.CONHR (IV) and XCH2 COOR1 (V) in presence of a base, then treating with acid and R1 is opt. substd. alkyl, alkenyl, aycloalkyl, aralkyl or phenyl. Pref. cpds. have X=CN or carbonyol, opt. mono- or di-alkyl substd., and R = H or 1-4C alkyl. In the formula, X is CN, NO2, acyl, carboxylic, ester, phosphoric ester, opt. substd. carbomoyl or sulphamoyl, tert, ammonium, tert. phosphonium, di-substd. sulphonium or sulphoxonium, or a sulphone or sulphonic acid ester gp. R - H opt. substd. alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl). (I) are couplers and condensation components in prodn. of dyes. Good yields of high purity prod. are obtd.
