titleOfInvention METHOD FOR PLASMA MULTIPLE ARC WELDING USING CONTINUOUSLY BURNING DC ARCS OF DIFFERENT POLARITIES
abstract Multiple arc plasma welding is effected using continuously burning d.c. arcs of different properties where adjacent arcs have opposed polarity, using protective media (I) and a plasma-forming gas (II). All arcs are ignited between nonconsumable electrodes (e.g. three electrodes) and the workpiece; or some arcs are formed between electrodes and the workpiece while another arc is created between a consumable electrode and the workpiece. The ratio: prod. of the current of two adjacent arcs:distance between these arcs, is >=6.103 A2/cm. (I) is pref. CO2, Ar, a gas mixture, and/or a welding powder. (II) is pref. a molecular gas, esp. CO2, for normal polarity; inert gas, esp. Ar; or their mixt. Used partic. for the welding of low alloy- and stainless steels-, Al and Cu. The entire thickness of joints can be welded at speed previously unobtainable.
