titleOfInvention | METHOD OF MANUFACTURING POLYESTERS |
abstract | A polyester of inherent viscosity at least 0.5 (pref. at least 0.7) is obtd. by reacting at 275-375 (pref. 330-360) degrees C, a mixt. of 60-35 (pref. 60-40) mole % terephthalic acid and 40-65 (pref. 40-60) mole % isophthalic acid and a hydroquinone deriv. of the formula: (where R is alkyl, aromatic or alicyclic and X is 1-4C alkyl, Cl or Br). The polyester has apparent melt viscosity (10,000 poise) low enough to be prepd. in commercial gravity flow reactors. Methyl-hydroquinone diacetate, terephthalic acid and isophthalic acid are reacted at 340 degrees C to give a polyester of inherent viscosity >1.20. |
