abstract New monomethylolimidazole derivs. are of formula (I): R is 1-4C alkyl or benzyl. R1 is H or 1-4C alkyl. When R1 is H R1 is 2-4C alkyl. They are prepd. by reacting the corresp. non-hydroxymethyl substd. cpd. with at least an equimolar amt. pref. 1.5 mole/mole of formaldehyde, in a reaction medium of pH is not 7, pref. 7-13. The reaction is pref. carried out at 40-200 degrees C. Pref. a catalyst (II) is used, selected from hydroxides or carbonates of Li, Na, K, Ca, Br, or quat. ammonium hydroxides, tert. amines or alkali metal salts of imidazoles. Pref. is not >0.5 eq. (II) is used per mole (I).
