In a process for sterilising liquids, in particular drinking water and service water, using silver ions, the sterilisation takes place rapidly, without complicated apparatus, without hazard to health, in an economical manner and with a reliable long-term effect being obtained even in the case of highly branched pipe systems in that the liquid to be sterilised is brought into contact with a cation-exchanger composition prepared with silver. The cation-exchanger composition is preferably a macroporous cation exchanger having weakly acidic substitutable groups which are complex-forming with heavy metal ions and have a high selectivity for silver ions. |
