abstract Prepn. of hydroxyphenyl ketones of formula (I) comprises reacting phenols of formula (II) with acid halides of formula (III) in liq. HF: R2-COX (III). In the formulae, R is a 1-18C alkyl or alkoxy group which is inert w.r.t. HF, or R is 1-5C perfluoroalkyl, halogen, NO2, or a 4C alkynyl gp. which forms a second aromatic ring (sic); R is 1-12C alkyl, 6-12C aryl, 7-14C aralkyl, perfluoroalkyl, an aryl group substd. by one or more 1-12C perfluoroalkyl gps., or a (R)m(OH)n-substd. benzoyl gp; n = 1 or 2; m = 0,1 or 2; R2 is R1 or a COX or (CH2)yCOX group; y = 1-6; X = halogen. Also claimed are new cpds. (I) where n and m are as above, R is 1-5C perfluoroalkyl or H, and R1 is 1-12C alkyl, aryl, perfluoroalkyl or aryl substd. by one or more perfluoroalkyl groups, with the proviso that R1 must be a perfluorinated group when R = H. (I) are used as intermediates for vasodilators and plant protection agents. The process gives high yields (e.g. 75-98%) of products with high purity (e.g. 95-97%).
