abstract | Antifreeze mixt., (I) for addn. to water, aq. solns. or water-contg. materials, consists of a predominant quantity of equal dextrose and fructose parts, admixed with >=1 further water-soluble additive materials. (A) are used in solns. contg. 2-10 wt. % solids. The (I) comprises mixt. of >=2 hydrate-formers. Max. concn. of each hydrate-forming component in the aq. soln. is 5-(2-5) wt. %. (A) can be added to cooling waters, used in medicine and biology, e.g. for preventing freezing of and damage to organs, cell cultures and tissues, and for preserving blood plasma and erythrocytes, and in freezing foods which might be damaged on freezing or thawing. Excessive freezing point lowering is based on stabilisation of hydrate formation in soln. Freezing curves, obtd. by plotting freezing point lowering against wt. % solids in aq. soln., shows that a given freezing point lowering could be achieved by using only 1/4 of new antifreeze, ("X"), compared with quantity required on using ethylene glycol. |
