Polyalkylene oxide diol-bis-diphenol carbonates are prepd. by heating (a) polyalkylene oxide diols of ave. mol. wt. >135 (7300) with (b) carboxylic acid-bis-aryl esters at 100-200 (110-180) degrees Alpha 35 torr, in the presence of catalysts, using >1 (1.1-2.25) mol. aryl ester per OH gp. in the diol. The resulting hydroxyaryl cpd. and excess aryl ester are distilled. The remaining polyalkylene oxide diol-bis-arylcarbonate (c) is heated with diphenols (d) at the same temp. and press. in the presence of catalysts, using >1 (1.1-2) mol. diphenol for each aryl ester gp. int he bis-aryl carbonate. The resulting cpd. is distilled. The polyalkylene oxide diol-bis-diphenol carbonates are bisphenol starting materials for the prepn. of polycarbonates. The polycarbonates obtd. are high mol.wt., segmented, thermoplastic prods., having improved shape stability on heating. |
