abstract New homophthalimides are of formula (I) together with their acid-addn. salts (where A and B are straight chain 2-4C alkylene opt. substd. by Me or Ph; R1-4 are each H, F, Cl, Br, OH, NH2, NO2, acetamido, 1-3C alkyl, 1-3C alkoxy or 1-3C alkylthio; R5-8 are each H, or 1-4C alkyl opt. substd. by Ph or methoxyphenyl; or R5+R6 and/or R7+R8 are straight chain 2-5C alkylene; and R9 is H or 1-6C alkyl opt. substd. by Ph). Specific. (I) include bis 3-(3,4-dihydro-4, 4-dimethyl-1, 3-dioxo-2(1H)-isoquinolyl)propyl amine and 2-(3,4-dihydro-4,4-dimethyl-1,3-dioxo-2(1H)-isoquinolyl)ethyl - 3-(3,4-dihydro-7-methoxy-4,4-dimethyl-1,3-dioxo-2-(1H)-isoquinoly- l)propyl methylamine. A typical cpd., bis 3-(3,4-dihydro-4,4-dimethyl-1,3-dioxo-2(1H)-isoquinolul)propyl methylamine, is prepd. by reaction of 4,4-dimethyl-isochroman-1,3-dione with bis-(3-aminopropyl)methylamine in glycol at 180 degrees C.
