abstract The arrangement ensures the controlled movement of a tool- or equipment- carrier over ferrous surfaces, esp. the vertical sides of ships. It comprises a hoisting unit (11) with the carrier (12) suspended (14) from it. At least two, pref. three gimbal-mounted magnets pull the latter onto the plating; multiple rollers on parallel axes projecting both sides of the magnets permit it to roll. From the magnet mountings spindles project through the carrier, held in journal bearings at right angles to the carriers plane Electric motor driven screw jacks acts on lever arms fixed to these spindles to rotate the roller units, singly or together, and steer the carrier. Power supply is by cable from the hoisting unit; fluids (compressed air, paint) supply can be similarly arranged. The hoist unit can be independently mobile fore- and - aft or slung from a crane.
