titleOfInvention | METHOD OF MANUFACTURING IRON ELECTRODES FOR ALKALINE ACCUMULATORS |
abstract | Fe electrodes of alkaline accumulators are produced by coating a steel plate grid with an active compsn. contg. a mixt. of magnetite ore concentrate, Fe2O3, synthetic fibres technical grades FeS, aq. NiSO4 soln. aq. surfactant soln. and polyvinyl alcohol. Dehydrating agent (I), e.g. conc. H2SO4, to the aq. polyvinyl alcohol soln. heated to a higher temp. before mixing with the remaining components of the active compsn. Compsn. is then smeared into grid and dried 15-30 min. at 110-180 degrees C, until degree of dehydration of polyvinyl alcohol reaches 25-30 mole % of double bonds. Use of aq. polyvinyl alcohol with a dehydrating additive as binder (i) improves bonding of active components with one another and grid, (ii) obviates need for organic solvents and prevents generation of toxic gases when drying electrodes, (iii) reduces electrode cost, (iv) reduces Fe consumption)1 A hr. by 35-40% and electrode wt. 2x. Film elasticity, electrical conductivity, strength, resistance to water and alkali at high temps. are improved. |
