Prepn. of o-nitrobenzyl bromide (I) takes place by brominating o-nitrotoluene with Br2 in CCl4, opt. in the presence of water, at boiling-heat, under irradiation with visible- or infra-red light, or in the presence of peroxide catalysts without irradiation. (I) is an intermediate for prepn. of o-nitrobenzyl alcohol, o-nitrobenzaldehyde and bromohexene. Simple process allows economic prepn. of (I), e.g. in 65-75% yield of theoretical, w.r.t. Br2 used. |
