abstract Hydrocarbon sulphonate prodn. by contacting hydrocarbons with SO3 takes place by (a) forming an internal turbulent flow stream contg. either hydrocarbon or SO3, (b) introducing a diluent stream around internal stream, which flows in same direction as the internal stream and (c) introducing either hydrocarbon or SO3 round diluent stream, provided it consists of reactant other than internal stream. In a pref. process, internal stream consists of SO3 and external stream of hydrocarbon. The petroleum sulphonates obtd. can be used in detergent compsns., formation of miscellar systems or further displacement fluids for petroleum recovery. Uniform sulphonation can be achieved, without clogging of nozzle.
