abstract Liquid crystalline dielectric contains, in addn. to a liquid crystalline substance, 0.001-5, pref. 0.01-2 wt.% cpd(s). (I) of the formula R1N=(X-CH2-Yn-X)2=N-R2 (where R1 and R2 are H or together are -CH2-(CH2-O-CH2)p-CH2-. The X gps. are -CH2- or -CO- and the Y gps. are 2), an acid addn. salt and/or a metal salt chelate complex of (I). (I) ensures that the dielectric forms stable layers oriented parallel to the electrode surface of the display element. (I) is e.g. 1,10-diaza-4,17,13,18-tetraoxabicyclo 8.5.5 eicosane and this is used in an amt. of 0.2 wt.%.
