New 1,5-naphthyridine-3-carboxylic acid derivs. are cpds. of formula (I) and, when R3 is H, their physiologically tolerable salts with inorganic and organic bases. In (I), R1 is halogen, 1-6C alkoxy or alkylthio (opt. substd. by 1-4C alkoxy, di(1-4C alkyl)amino or a 5-7 membered N-heterocycle (opt. contg. a further N-, O- or S-atom) which in turn may be substd. by a 1-4C alkyl), di(1-4C alkyl)amino, a 5-7 membered N-heterocycle (opt. contg. a further N-, O- or S-atom) which may be substd. by a 1-4C alkyl group, or a heteroarlthio group. R2 is 1-6C alkyl or 2-6c alkenyl. R3 is H; 1-6C alkyl; or alkyl substd. by di(1-4C alkyl)amino or a 5-7 membered N-heterocycle (opt. contg. a further N-, O- or S-atom) which in turn may be substd. by a 1-4C alkyl group. (I) show good inhibitory activity against bacteria, esp. gram-positive organisms and give good urine levels. They are therefore useful as urinary tract antibacterials. |
