Solidification of aq.solns. (I) contg. (radioactive of toxic) waste is carried out by mixing with an organic, nonmetallic binder (II), which sets on mixing with water, and water glass (III). A substance (IV) promoting mixing of (I) and (II) is produced first by mixing ca 1 kg. gypsum (V), contg 4.7-6.6% crystals and 1% carbonate, with 100-500 ml (III) with a sp. gr. of 1.2-1.8 kg/cm3 (sic). 1 kg of the resultant partly granular, partly powdered mixt. is treated with 500 ml. aq. soln. of 40 wt.% HF, H2SO4, HClO4, HCl, HNO3, KOH, NaOH, NH3 or CaOH (sic) or 50 wt.% water-soluble organic cpds. Homogenous distribution of the waste in the end prod. can be attained. The process is simple and not hazardous, and can even be used to solidify strongly acid or alkaline solns. without lengthy delays. The substances used are as cheap as possible. |
