abstract The focal plane shutter has two separate metal foils, each wound on a reel (5, 13) on one side of the exposure window. The foils are unwound from the reels to slide between upper and lower slots (4, 4a) without any cables or bands having to pull the foils into the grooves. The shutter does not require any other controls other than the drives to the reels. The foils are self supporting in the slots with the leading foil curved around its reel (5) while the trailing foil (12) is normally straight and is kept on its reel (13) by outside rollers (18).
