abstract Dye lasers in which a pumped light source is used to stimulate emission from a cel contg. a soln. of dye of formula (in which Y is NR1R2, Y is +NR1R2A- A-, being an anion, B is the remainder of an opt. substd. benzene or naphthalene ring, and D the remainder of an opt. substd. naphthalene ring, R2 is H, opt. substd. alkyl or aralkyl, R1 is as R2, opt. substd. cycloalkyl or an alkylene gp. attached to the adjacent C atom of B or D. R1 and R2 together may also complete a ring, opt. contg other hetero atoms). Coherent light is emitted in the region of 700 nm wavelength, where there is a shortage of efficient dyes.
